the day i met the cabin of lovin'

7/25/07

Session 6?!!?! Ending already?!?!

This week already feels way different than the rest. Our cabin is vibrant, inspiring, and independent. Something about them is touching me to the core. Shocking me at the core. It's refreshing.

One of our campers is 22 with CP... incredibly young, spirited, fun... we had a long talk about the challenges of dating when you have a disability... of finding someone who understands you and accepts you. Made my problems seem so silly.

Another camper says "hey, buddy" more than anyone you will ever meet. Ever. And her boyfriend is here this week. He loves taking pictures, but only of people who are bald (like him) or autistic (like him).

One of the weekly campers' girlfirends in in our cabin - she' sweet as pie, but I really do have to be the third wheel. He keeps signing that he wants to take her to kiss her at the waterfall. SO I've learned how to say "no kissing at the waterfall," "no kissing in the cabin," "no kissing in the craft building," and "you look like a hamburger" in sign language.

He pretty much hates me now.

Another one of our campers is absolutely incredible.. she's an older woman, deaf... she's missing both of her les, but she can haul herself into bed, take herself to the bathroom... she's really inspiring. And she blows kisses and waves to everyone.. she has a spark in her eye.

Watermelon has gotten really attached... probably too attached. He throws stuff at the guys I'm talking to, get's protective of who I'm with... he had a meltdown because he saw me eating an apple with peanutbutter on his front porch. He just started screaming and crying and screaming "PEANUTBUTTER!!!!" over and over and over.... but the next night I saw him sitting on the porch eating an apple with peanutbutter he took at dinner.

"Don't you go talking to Cory. You don't need him. He a BAD INFLUENCE on you."

Oh, dear...
