the day i played monet

okay, so maybe not monet. but i painted some art today. and i love it... both the act of painting and the paintings themselves.

see, i got fed up with shopping for apartment stuff. i've enjoyed every second of it, but there are a lot of walls to cover, and frames and pictures and posters are expensive. so i went to walmart, bought some canvases (flat, not stretched.. light enough to hang i hope), stocked up on acrylic paints, and had a cheap-paint fest. and 5 canvases and paint and everything only cost $18. the price of ONE of the target frames i had my eye on.

so the paintings are beautiful... and i'm usually not a "confident artist"... and they're nothing spectacular, for sure, but they mean something to me. they're just geometric, abstract avocado green panels. but they're so me.

they're big.. 12x18 maybe? something like it? and there are three (i have 3 more little blank canvases to work with).. and they're each just avocado green on white. the first is a simple zebra print, the second is the sillhouette of a fern on a green background with my monogram in the lower left part, and the third is a pattern of concentric circles that become white polka-dots towards the top. the room is coming together.. i think i'm going to do a burnt orange little panel to put by the door.

it's all coming together.

so pat's leaving for college tomorrow.. how scary is that? he's getting a little excited, too, which is good -- pat is known for his lack-of-emotion, so his little signs of joy are a big deal. mom is going to be a wreck, i'm sure. but i think college will be good for him... he needs to move out, find his independence. i just pray that he discerns his way through and clings to what really matters.

nolan was a grouch today.. he says he's sick, which i suppose i believe... but his sicknesses are so peculiar. he has to sit on the couch and watch cartoon network all day, but if it's time for food his throat feels fine, and he ends up gulping down even more than when he's well. and yes, his throat is red by the end of the day.. but it could be from him hollering at us every time we beg him to turn off those stupid japanese cartoons. and no matter what, mom responds to it with "poor nolan.. he's sick." he flipped out on me twice today. mom's response?

"poor baby.. you should have given him juice."

excuse me?

apparently mr. nolan with his size 14-w shoes can still hustle us and blame it on not having any juice. for pete's sake.

babysitting went well.. the kids are funny. once i went upstairs after cleaning the kitchen to find both boys laying down -- one on a bed, one under it.

"what are you guys doing?"
--"playing dead."
"oh. [long pause] ... are dead people ticklish?"
--"no silly.. they're dead."

clearly.

i miss camp though. really miss camp. my goal is to find a camp-ish job for the year by the end of this weekend.. or at least send out all my info. who knows.

i think i'm ready to go back to school? i'm not sure. i'm ready to have a bedroom to call my own.. haven't done that in a long time, for sure. and i miss my furmanites and cory. i just haven't gotten in "class mode" yet... i'm so confused about what i want to do that i'm having trouble getting really excited about school. and usually at this point, i'm really excited about school. i'm a nerd. i haven't done any school supplies shopping. unusual for me. and i'm going to miss the fam.. we've grown close over the last year, and pat leaving makes me sad... i always feel like i should be spending more time with them.

well cops just came on tv so that's my cue to go to bed. as classy as cops is ;)... maybe i'd enjoy it more if i was drinking a plastic twist-top miller light out of a paper bag.

i'm kidding, i promise.

gnite, moon...
